The Dragonfly Theater's mission is to stimulate, promote, teach, and develop interest in the dramatic arts with a family oriented atmosphere; to educate the general public in the dramatic arts; to advance the level of culture by establishing and maintaining a theater for the productions of art in many forms and of the highest standards; and to bring all aspects of the arts to areas and centers not adequately served.
In 2008, after almost 20 years of working multiple aspects of many theater companies, Beca Gates opened The Dragonfly Theater in Dedham. The goal of the Dragonfly Theater was to bring artists together and offer quality theatre to the community free of charge.
In 2013, with the encouragement of our community and partners, we started working with children and young adults in a more structured environment. In line with our belief that the arts are for everyone and that each individual has much to bring to the group, we take a stance that the learning of the arts should not be limited by finances. We began with scholarships and in 2015, with the assistance of a grant from the Dedham Cultural Council, we began offering our workshops free of charge to Dedham students.
We have now grown into a year-round Community Theater offering classics, favorites, and original works. Slthough we have begun charging for our shows, we continue to offer many events including our Summer Shakespeare on the lawn of The Fairbanks House in Dedham and at the Ruth Gordon Ampitheater in Quincy.
